Long before she became a fixture of Monaco's red carpets, Charlene Wittstock dressed like the competitive swimmer she was. A 2001 photograph taken in South Africa showed her in grey sweatpants, a navy windbreaker and Nike trainers, and later that year she kept the sporty theme going on the cover of South African Sports Illustrated, posing barefoot in a red tank top and white flared jeans. That practical, athletic wardrobe followed her into her early years with Prince Albert, including a 2006 visit to Richards Bay where she coached children's swimming lessons in cargo shorts and a polo shirt.
Her move into formal royal dressing came with some well documented missteps. For her first Monaco Red Cross Ball in 2006, she borrowed a sparkly, semi sheer backless gown from a friend, a choice she later told Tatler left her looking, in her own words, like a Christmas tree. She has since credited her early uncertainty around red carpet dressing to a background built around swimsuits rather than gowns, telling Vogue ahead of her 2011 wedding that finding her fashion footing had been one of her biggest adjustments to royal life.
