The renovation of the Prince's Palace west wing, known as the Nouvelle Aile II project and commissioned by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, has earned silver level BD2M certification for its design phase, the Palace announced on Tuesday. Work on the project began in April 2025 and remains underway, rebuilding the wing and adding space above it to create new private quarters for the princely family.

The certification, short for Batiments Durables Mediterraneens de Monaco, recognises a project the Palace describes as reconciling the preservation of the site's architectural identity and historic facades with modern comfort and environmental performance, in line with the Sovereign Prince's own commitment to sustainable development. From the design stage, priority was given to high performance and bio based materials, reuse and circular economy principles, along with involving Monegasque and local companies in the work.

The project's specifications called for a seawater thermal energy system from the outset, making the west wing the first building in Monaco-Ville to draw on the technology, even though similar systems have run elsewhere in the principality for decades. Initiated by Prince Albert II, the system will let the building use seawater to meet its heating and cooling needs, cutting its reliance on fossil fuels while giving managers finer control over how its energy is used.

Prince Albert II received the BD2M certification in person during a ceremony at the Palace attended by everyone involved in the project, which is being carried out at the Sovereign's own initiative and managed by the Administration of His Properties. With the design phase now certified, the renovation moves forward as one of the more closely watched heritage projects in Monaco-Ville, pairing a historically sensitive rebuild with infrastructure the principality has not yet used in that part of the Rock.
