Gianni Amelio’s Nessun dolore premiered on 3 September 2026 during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, one of the principal programmes of La Biennale di Venezia. The film was presented in Venice Open, Out of Competition. Gianni Amelio was joined on the red carpet by Alessandro Borghi, Valeria Golino, Valerio Mastandrea and Beidja Yahiaoui before the official screening at the Sala Grande.

Borghi plays Davide, a bookseller living in Rome whose stable existence is interrupted by an unexpected encounter with a North African child. As the situation develops, Davide is forced to reconsider his understanding of responsibility and his relationship with people living outside his familiar social environment.

Written by Gianni Amelio and Davide Serino with Andrea Quetti, the film explores migration through a personal moral dilemma. Its central question concerns the point at which awareness of another person’s suffering becomes a demand for action. Amelio has addressed related subjects throughout his career. Lamerica examined migration and the changing relationship between Italy and Albania, while The Stolen Children focused on vulnerable lives within Italian society. His 1998 film The Way We Laughed received the Golden Lion in Venice.

Among the guests attending the premiere was Anna Stukkert, Director of Global Partnerships at the Office of H.H. Sheikh AbdulHakim Al Maktoum Group Holdings. Her professional activities include developing international partnerships and supporting dialogue between business, institutional and creative sectors, including selected initiatives connected with cinema and culture.

The second day of Venezia 83 also featured films by Werner Herzog, Martin McDonagh, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The programme brought together Italian and international productions across the festival’s official sections. The presentation of Nessun dolore added a contemporary Italian perspective to this wider programme and continued Gianni Amelio’s longstanding association with the Venice International Film Festival.
