Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll was spotted behind the wheel of one of the marque's rarest cars on the streets of Monaco during Formula 1's summer break, driving an Aston Martin DBR22 speedster worth an estimated 2.5 to 3 million pounds. Only 22 examples of the open cockpit speedster were ever built, making Stroll's sighting in the principality a rare public appearance for a car that spends most of its time in private collections.

The DBR22 is built around a 5.2 litre twin turbocharged V12 producing 705 horsepower and 752 Newton metres of torque, enough to send it from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 198 miles per hour. Aston Martin originally priced the car at 1.5 million pounds before customisation, a figure that has since climbed toward double that on the rare occasions a unit changes hands.

The speedster takes its name and inspiration from the DBR1, the Aston Martin that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959, and was introduced in 2022 to mark a decade of Q by Aston Martin, the marque's bespoke commissioning division. Its open cockpit design, stripped of a windscreen in favour of a low-slung aero screen, makes it as much a piece of coachbuilt heritage as a road car, and one built in numbers small enough that most enthusiasts will only ever see photographs of it.

The DBR22 joins a car collection that already includes an Aston Martin Vantage, a Mercedes-AMG GT R, a Ferrari California and a Lamborghini Huracan, giving Stroll one of the more varied garages on the grid. The sighting comes during a difficult season for his Aston Martin Formula 1 team, which has been hit by 11 retirements so far and sits tenth in the constructors championship with a single point, a stretch of results that makes a quiet drive through Monaco in a 3 million pound speedster a rare bright spot in an otherwise trying year.
