# Formula 1 Adds a Monaco Sprint as Part of a Record 10 Sprint Races in 2027

Formula 1's 2027 calendar, formally announced this week, will feature 10 sprint races, a record after a previous maximum of six per season. Monaco is among the circuits hosting the format for the first time, alongside Bahrain, Australia, Japan and Abu Dhabi, while Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar keep their sprints.

Adding a sprint event to Monaco will inevitably raise eyebrows, given how close to impossible overtaking is considered on the historic street circuit. F1 is selling the move on the fact that it means two separate qualifying sessions at Monaco, an exercise renowned as one of the highlights of the season on the demanding track, which could produce two different grid orders and therefore more variability. The flip side is that, with little chance to overtake, the sprint's finishing order will be pretty much locked in after the first lap, barring accidents.

Organisers are banking on sprints to boost ticket sales, with competitive action across all three days of a race weekend rather than just the traditional Saturday and Sunday. At Silverstone, holding a sprint this year was seen as a major factor behind the British Grand Prix's record attendance, with 64,000 more fans over the four days compared with the previous, non sprint edition.

The 2027 season opens in Bahrain on March 12 to 14, followed by Saudi Arabia a week later, though both remain in doubt while the war in the Middle East continues. Formula 1 is working on contingency plans in case this year's races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, as well as next season's Middle East opener, cannot go ahead as planned. The 2027 calendar also marks the return of Portugal and Turkey, absent since serving as pandemic era placeholders, for a total of 24 grands prix across five continents.

"We are thrilled to welcome Portugal and Turkey to the championship and to expand sprint racing to 10 events, giving our fans even more intensity, drama, and the wheel to wheel action that make our sport so special," said Stefano Domenicali, F1's president and chief executive officer. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the calendar "combines tradition, innovation and fan engagement while maintaining the highest sporting standards."
