# Bombing in Monaco Exposes a Tangled Plot Against a Ukrainian Tycoon

Ukrainian businessman Vadym Yermolaiev was injured in late June when a remote-controlled device exploded at the entrance of his Monaco apartment building, an attack that also wounded two people close to him, one of them critically. The remote trigger points to more than one person being involved in planning it.

Yermolaiev built his fortune running the Alef Group, active in commercial real estate, manufacturing and agriculture. Ukraine placed him under sanctions in 2023 over his ties to Russia, and he had given up his Ukrainian citizenship years earlier.

Suspicion quickly fell on Anastasiia Berezovska, a 39 year old Ukrainian national living in Germany, described as connected to the plot. She was later found dead in Ukraine, shot in the head. A Ukrainian military intelligence officer admitted to killing her, helped by a former police officer, saying he had acted on his own initiative without his superiors' knowledge. Both men were detained on suspicion of murder.

Ukraine's Security Service, the SBU, said it found repeated cryptocurrency and cash transfers from the two suspects to Berezovska, and investigators recovered spent pistol casings at the scene of her death. A basement belonging to the former officer appeared to have been used to hold and interrogate her. The SBU said it is continuing to investigate who ordered the Monaco bombing.
